HEAVY LOAD ENGINEERING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL PRECISION LOGISTICS FOR A 305-TON TRANSFORMER
As part of securing the energy supply, the KAHL Group was responsible for the transport and positioning of a 350 MVA backup transformer for the Arpe substation.
With a weight of 305 tons and extraordinary dimensions, the project placed the highest demands on technology, planning, and logistics. The key challenge of this project lay in the consistently integrated combination of multiple heavy-load methods. Instead of isolated individual measures, a holistic transport and installation concept was developed in which all steps were precisely coordinated with one another.
Project Overview:
• Cargo: Large power transformer Dimensions: 11,2 x 3,9 x 4,5 m, in total 305 tons
The equipment used included, among others, a 16-axle SPMT, the G² I K600 side girder bridge (2 × 14 axles), a 19-axle platform trailer, as well as hydraulic lifting and skidding systems. Multiple vehicle changes, lateral shifting operations, temporary bridge crossing systems, and complex load distributions were required to safely manage confined spaces, public roads, and gradients of up to 9%. A decisive success factor was the close integration of engineering, transport coordination, and operational execution. All work steps were carried out in accordance with an approved method statement and under continuous monitoring of safety and load conditions.
This project impressively demonstrates how even extremely demanding tasks can be executed safely, efficiently, and with millimetre precision through the intelligent combination of proven heavy-load technologies-setting a benchmark for modern heavy-load logistics.
