1981: THE FIRST FOUR-AXLE HEAVY-DUTY TRACTOR UNIT

In 1981, KAHL developed the first four-axle heavy-duty tractor unit based on what is now the standard design, setting an important milestone in heavy transport.

Even at that time, the company transported a wide variety of goods, including precast concrete elements, construction machinery, and large industrial components. However, the three-axle tractor units used back then were increasingly reaching their limits, particularly with regard to permissible axle loads.

In search of a long-term solution, Hans and Helmut Kahl came up with the idea of developing a compact four-axle vehicle capable of handling higher loads while remaining flexible in operation.

The result was a tractor unit with an axle load distribution of 7.5 t, 7.5 t, and twice 10 t. Even back then, air tanks and the fuel tank were positioned in a modular unit behind the driver’s cab — a technical concept that has proven itself to this day.

With this development, Kahl set a new benchmark in heavy transport at an early stage and laid an important foundation for the further development of modern heavy-duty tractor units.
